“Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken…”
As we approach the holidays and all that the season brings, from social gatherings and to-do lists to baking marathons and to-buy lists, our calendars can start to feel a little overwhelming. In these times, it can be difficult to set aside time for God and for reflecting on His word. The holiday season reminds us, however, to take stock of our blessings and to focus on what we are thankful for in our lives.
Hebrews also poignantly reminds us about gratefulness. “Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken,” (Hebrews 12:28). If we let those words sink into our hearts and minds, they can help to put life into proper perspective. This verse invites us to look beyond the surface of things, and asks us to focus, with thankfulness, on the unshakable gifts that have freely been given to us.
Talk about blessings!! In light of the gift of the unshakable kingdom, we don’t have need of much else. We know that, in Christ, our deepest needs have been cared for and we are held in His security and in His love. With that knowledge, a lot of our cares become less significant and our louder desires become quiet.
What could possibly compare to the beauty of God’s kingdom? What could possibly be stronger than the reassurance He has given us through His son? When we concentrate on the things that can’t be taken from us, the important things during the holiday season and beyond come into true focus. From cookies and shiny gifts to Santa’s elves and guest lists, when we are focused instead on Jesus and his eternal gifts, our hearts can’t help but grow in unshakable thanks in response to the presence of His unshakable love.
